The Jefferson County Museum (JCM), a small history museum in Charles Town, West Virginia, is seeking a part-time curator and outreach coordinator.
Since its founding more than 55 years ago, the museum has acquired, maintained, and exhibited an extraordinary collection of artifacts and documents reflecting the county’s rich history. To enhance engagement with the diverse local community and to attract tourists interested in history, JCM is searching for a part-time curator and outreach coordinator with the experience, skills, energy, and creativity to work collaboratively with two museum staff, director and historian, in planning and carrying out education, exhibition, outreach, and marketing activities.
The curator and outreach coordinator will also assist in the day-to-day operations of the museum; staff the reception desk; recruit and work with volunteers and interns; and perform other duties, as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS A bachelor’s degree in museum studies or equivalent
Experience in creative public engagement, including outreach, education, and marketing, especially in a cultural setting and preferably in a museum
Experience in curating innovative and inclusive exhibits, programs, and events for a diverse audience, preferably in a museum
Excellent analytical, program management, problem-solving, and communication (oral and written) skills
Ability to interact with the public, co-workers, and donors in a consistently friendly, courteous, and flexible manner
Ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects, and adapt to changing circumstances
Commitment to public service, the museum’s mission, education, and diversity and inclusiveness
Interest in, and ability to develop, expertise in Jefferson County history
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and PastPerfect software
Experience with Facebook, Twitter, and other social media
ADDITIONAL EXPERIENCE DESIRED
At least two years’ working in a museum
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises museum volunteers and interns
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Schedule: Part-time, 25 hours per week, 5 hours per day; Tuesday to Saturday
Pay: $15 - $18 per hour, depending upon qualifications and experience
Benefits: 1 week paid leave per year and pay for non-Monday holidays
Reports to: JCM director
