Concord Point Lighthouse and Keeper’s House Museum


Both built in 1827, the Concord Point Lighthouse and Keeper’s House Museum are the best-known tourist attractions in Harford County, Maryland, and are managed by The Friends of the Concord Point Lighthouse, a non-profit organization. Open April through October, both properties offer visitors the opportunity to explore the history of the Lighthouse and view artifacts that delight children and adults. A museum gift shop features specialty items for lighthouse lovers and Maryland devotees. The Lighthouse offers private tours and special events throughout the year. The Coordinator role includes volunteer recruitment, training, and supervision, event booking of the grounds, and operating the museum, gift shop and lighthouse. This is a year-round, part time non-exempt position averaging 20-25 hours per week, including weekends during the open season and occasional evenings; 15-18 house/week during the closed season.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Initiate volunteer recruitment activities (Volunteer Fair, college postings, community boards) and engage with the community at large to recruit volunteers.
  • Screen potential volunteers and recommend selected volunteers to Executive Director.
  • Coordinate the Volunteer Program. Lead the on-boarding and training of new volunteers for the lighthouse, museum, and event activities. Update, distribute and review the annual booklet for the season’s volunteers.
  • Schedule shifts to ensure the established coverage necessary for the properties. Plan seasonal schedule, review and communicate with volunteers.
  • Coordinate volunteers that are providing support services such as mailings, office duties, gardening, tour leaders and docents.
  • Track volunteer hours to generate monthly and annual reports.
  • Connect regularly with volunteers to build and maintain a positive culture that reflects the mission of the organization including team-building and appreciation events.
  • Oversee the booking of wedding/events on Lighthouse and Keeper’s House grounds, communicating with inquirers, confirming dates, and reviewing city events calendar.
  • Assist with updates to the website, Facebook page and Instagram account regularly, to provide updates and capture visitor experiences.
  • Provide oversight of gift shop during operating hours, selling merchandise, replenishing inventory, pricing items for sale, and recommending new items to sell.
  • Coordinate tour requests for schools and other visitors requesting private tours.
  • Open and close the buildings, securing the property.
  • Ensure grounds and property are maintained throughout the shift with a focus on safety and security.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.


Ÿ  BA/BS preferred; major in history or other related disciplines and non-profit experience a plus.

Ÿ  Experience coordinating volunteers and events and/or other job-related experience, such as working in a museum, human resources, or leading teams or organizations.

Ÿ  Retail sales and cash handling experience.

Ÿ  Experience with and working knowledge of Microsoft Office, databases and social media.

Ÿ  Easily engages with a wide variety of people.

Ÿ  Understands and values the importance of building a positive internal culture.

Ÿ  Performs work as a team player.

Ÿ  Proficient in effectively meeting deadlines.

Ÿ  Demonstrates organizational and record keeping skills.

  • Availability and willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends during the open season and evenings as needed.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work independently toward objectives.

Physical Demands and Working Environment:

  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders comfortably and frequently
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds
  • Able to sit for periods of time while working on computer
  • Able to transport inventory for stocking of gift shop and occasional sales elsewhere
  • Able to lead group activities for all ages
  • Agreeable to actively working in historic buildings

Compensation: $14-18/hour depending upon experience and other qualifications.

Benefits: Core hours with flexibility due to nature of position (weekends during open season and some evenings). Gift shop discount. Health, life insurance are not offered at this time.
